How did studying at Escape Studios help you into the world of VFX?

Escape Studios teaches you the core skills of visual effects, offering the same software used in industry and practice material. Thanks to Escape Studios’ connections to companies, I got to work at Milk VFX after 2nd year during the summer holidays. Without that experience, I'm not sure I'd have made it to ILM.

Where do you currently work and what are you working on at the moment?

I am currently working at Industrial Light & Magic, which has been a dream come true for me as I am also a Star Wars fan. Unfortunately I cannot say what I am working on right now, but I can say that I got to work on some 'Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker' shots, and that was very exciting!

What is it like to work as a Roto/Prep Graduate Artist at Industrial Light & Magic?

It is very exciting, I've only been there for 3 months and already got to work on 2 TV shows and 2 feature films. I was assigned a really nice mentor who showed me how the pipeline works and is my go to person whenever I have questions. The studio itself is a very friendly environment and has incredible decoration, with many Star Wars posters and spaceships hanging.

What have you been up to since you left Escape Studios?

After leaving Escape Studios I was in desperate need of a holiday, a few months after finishing I got an offer from ILM and have been there ever since.

What lessons have you learnt during your time studying and your time working in VFX?

When studying try your best to focus on creating a showreel as that is what will get you a job. When working I'd say always double check what you need to do, it's better to ask for help if you get stuck than waste time working on something and make no progress.

What work are you most proud of working on and is your most notable achievement?

I worked on a short film called JERICH0 for my final year team project at Escape Studios, it was a technically simple project but felt like a huge accomplishment since I played a big role as lead compositor. I really liked being part of a small team and seeing the vfx shots develop all the way from storyboard to final comp. The film ended up winning multiple awards at various film festivals, it even made it to BAFTA student film shortlist.

If you had to sum up your time at Escape Studios in one word, what would it be and why?

Specialised. Escape Studios encourages students to specialise in one area, which increases employability by the end of the course.

What's your favourite TV Show and why?

The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Epic battles, the amazing world building and character development, it really ticks all the boxes for me. It was after watching Lord of The Rings behind the scenes that I developed a deep interest in filmmaking and Visual Effects.

What course did you study?

The Art of Visual Effects BA

Thanks to Escape Studios’ connections, I got to work at Milk VFX after 2nd year during the summer holidays. Without that experience, I'm not sure I'd have made it to ILM.
