Tony Wells
What course did you study?
I studied the 2D Compositing for VFX Part Time Evening Course between June and November 2018.
What’s your favourite movie and why?
Probably the entire Harry Potter series. I loved the books and have watched the films so many times. I just love the story!
Where do you currently work? / What are you working on at the moment?
I have been freelancing for the last 4+ years working on 2D & 3D animations, however my main focus at the moment is working on my shots for my Compositing showreel.
What have you worked on / been up to since you left Escape Studios?
I finished my Roto shot and am in the process of completing my removal / cleanup shot. In a couple of weeks I will be contributing to an in-house production at Escape Studios for one of the other short courses.
What work are you most proud of working on and what is your most notable achievement?
Definitely my Roto shot; I spent as much of my spare time I could during the course and around my other projects working on the shot and to see it come together at the end was really satisfying for me.
What do you find most exciting about working in the creative industry?
The next project will more often than not always have new challenges for you to tackle, overcome and learn from. It’s never boring!
If you had to sum up your time at Escape Studios in one word what would it be and why?
Brilliant. The course was brilliant, my tutor was brilliant and to be around other creatives in similar disciplines to yourself and others (3D for instance) provides you with a brilliant opportunity to meet new people and network.
How did studying at Escape Studios help you into the world of becoming a Roto/ Prep Artist? / prepare you for this role?
It helped immensely. It wasn’t just about what we were taught, it was also how it was taught. We were provided with an abundance of extra material, techniques and workflows alongside the basic knowledge you would expect. This will be a huge help for when we are all working in the industry.
What lessons have you learned during your time studying and your time working as a Freelancer?
The more you put into something, the more you get out of it. Whether it’s time, hard work or both.
What is your advice for those considering entering the industry?
It may seem daunting at first but you need to work hard at it and allow yourself time to learn, you’ll get there. Then the real hard work begins!

It wasn’t just about what we were taught at Escape, it was also how it was taught. We were provided with an abundance of extra material, techniques and workflows alongside the basic knowledge you would expect.
