Why VFX and why Escape?
Originally, VFX was just a hobby … something I’ve loved since I was young but never imagined to be a legitimate career possibility. That’s until I entered Escape’s “the best from the bedroom” competition, which involves submitting work you have created; the winner will get the chance to study an Escape online course for free. I was so surprised when I received an email explaining that I had won the competition. I don't think I've ever gotten out of bed so quickly to be honest –I can’t remember how went from being horizontal to vertical so quickly! All of a sudden I was standing in the middle of my room in shock! Up until that point I had been working working as a draughtsman for 6 years at an engineering firms in Perth, Western Australia. Completing the online course with Escape gave me the confidence to really chase my dream … so I resigned from my Draughtsman position, packed up my life and moved to London. I'm very grateful for everything Escape has given me.
What are you doing at the moment?
At the moment I'm working here at Escape Studios as a 2D studio assistant helping new students learn composting, as well as working on a couple of side projects.
What's your favourite movie?
I don't have a favorite movie per se, but there are a few films that have inspired me to want to be in VFX industry. Lord of the Rings, Starwars, Troll hunter, Monsters.
Can you sum up your experience at Escape Studios?
Opportunity. Without the opportunity escape has given me, I wouldn't have changed my career or moved to London.
What lessons have you learnt studying and working at Escape?
Aside from advanced technical skills and techniques, Escape has reaffirmed in me the importance of discipline and attention to detail.
Do you have any advice for people looking to study VFX at Escape?
Start pursuing your goals early in life. Don’t wait. I know my own journey has given me a unique entry to the VFX world, which is important, but at times I still regret not ripping off the band aid sooner. If your goal is to work in Film, VFX or anything, figure out what you can do today to get you closer to that goal. Whether that's honing your skills, taking courses, working on your showreel etc., don't waste time … just do it!
