Ever wondered what it’s like working as Game Artist? Well wonder no more, as we recently caught up with professional game designer and developer Mike Bithell. 

Mike is a British video game designer and developer, best known for his work on Thomas Was Alone which received critical acclaim and Volume video game.

Could you give us a brief description of what you do every day in your job?

My job is pretty varied... on any given day I'll likely spend a few hours coding, a couple of hours meeting with members of the team to discuss strategy, or provide feedback on their work, and another hour or so discussing things with our partners. I'm lucky in that I thoroughly enjoy all areas of the work I do, and get a kick out of the variety. I suspect I wouldn't be very good at doing any one, single job.

What can people expect when they graduate from Escape Studios?

Your first job will likely be very specialized, and very focused on a small area of the game. You'll spend weeks placing crates in a level, or figuring out a specific moment of the game. Not being part of the broader conversations may frustrate short term, but gaining access and impact happens quickly if you take the small jobs seriously. Ultimately, you're looking for opportunities to make your work special, and collaborate well with colleagues.

Have you got any insights for people considering becoming a game artist or developer?  

Making video games is the best job in the world. We get to create experiences and author opportunities for the player. That job requires a focus on every aspect of a game's design, from the massive in scale to the tiny. That's a skill you'll learn from embedding in a team and learning from pros. Spend your career surrounding yourself with people who are smarter than you, and things should be fun.
