One of our industry partners REWIND, was recently featured on The Apprentice. They were the VR developers that created the titles featured in the show, as well as the virtual boardroom in which Lord Sugar set the task.

The episode showed the value that both the creative industries and business have and what can happen when they join forces. VR is not just limited for the use of the creative industries and if the world of business applies new innovations to its advertising faster, and the impact that it can have on their current and potential audiences can drive awareness and develop fun and exciting new content.

The REWIND team managed to complete two fully playable VR games in under 18 hours, which is a pretty impressive considering none of the contestants had any knowledge of the games industry or game development before. Anyone who has tried to create a game before knows that 18 hours is an extremely short amount of time to create anything that shows the full potential of VR but it proves that you can create fun and exciting mini games to help boost your brand's awareness and engage more with customers.

Virtual reality is not just limited to creating fun little games and most people are not aware that virtual reality technology is available for them to buy and operate from the comfort of their own living room.

We asked the Deans of Pearson Business School and Escape Studios to give their opinion on VR and the world of business:

"I think the positives to draw from VR gaming being featured on a show such as The Apprentice are very much that it will help to capture the imagination of what is now possible. Innovation can sometimes be driven by borrowing ideas or processes from a very different background and applying it in another context. While the show almost certainly trivialised the extensive work and complexity that goes into making VR applications, it will have undoubtedly got the audience thinking about a very exciting form of technology that is starting to impact upon the world of business."

"I think what this episode showed is that the old saying that 'content is king' is equally true of VR as it is for any other medium. It's amazing that the developers managed to put together a working demo in 18 hours, but understanding that the content of the VR experience is the most important aspect came through here, together with an appreciation of the conventions and "dos and don'ts" of VR which the contestants clearly lacked. It's at the stage video was a while back in the sense that the tools are more accessible for people to create their own content, but we all know that the home video that we put together on our laptop will not engage without a  good understanding of editing and film language. Without a knowledge and experience of what works and what doesn't in VR it's hard to produce compelling content."
