Last weekend (9th-11th June 2017) saw the return of our annual Game Jam! Our annual game design competition offers up and coming talent the opportunity to hone their skills, and brings together coders, game artists and project managers over one weekend to encourage creativity and ideas to develop a brand new game! This year’s event was in partnership with Gram Games, an entertainment company delivering engaging social games for mobile and the developers behind global smash hit games including 1010!, Merged! and Six!.
The Game Jam kicked off on Friday 7pm at our Midtown campus, and as ever participants were given just 48 hours to brainstorm, design and complete their games to fit with the theme: ‘Contrast’ and with just 2 hours on Friday night to invent an idea for a completely new game, and no part of the game could be pre-made in advance, so it wasn’t going to be easy task!
Over the course of the weekend the teams had access to industry mentors from UKIE and Gram Games to offer them support, so they were able to get expert advice.
After the 48 hours were up and the games were created; the teams had to present their games to a panel of industry judges, in order to win an exclusive prize package! The games were judged by experts including Simon Fenton, Head of Games (Escape), David from Gram Games and Carrie from 3D Artist. The competition was judged on the games concept, design, art, relevance to the brief and overall delivery.
What did they win? Along with access to some of the best contacts in the games industry, the winning team will now get the chance to spend a Friday at Gram Games and experience their Prototype Friday activity. This is a unique approach to making games which stems from prototyping, failure, iteration, and constant innovation. The team will have exclusive access for one day to the Gram Games offices, witnessing how the Gram team comes up with its most innovative titles.
Massive congrats to Team Indigo Quack - Sara Silva, Steven Upton, Luke Parlin and Jason McKenzie who formed the 2017 winning team!
