Kathy studied our 3D for VFX (Online) course, graduated from Escape Studios in 2012 and is now a CG Artist at Polar Media.
Thoughts on the future of VFX?
We are already seeing lots of investment in VR/AR, immersive experiences which will continue to grow I believe. Also the increasing usage of 8k will mean storage solutions (cloud storage etc). I think that AI developments will also play a big role in the future of VFX, whether it be automation of tasks or making them more efficient.
What was the moment you knew you wanted to be in the creative industries?
Since I was around 6, playing my first computer game, Conquest of the Longbow by Sierra which was designed by a woman, Christy Marx!
What were your first impressions?/What are the biggest challenges of being a woman in the VFX industry?
We need more women in the VFX industry and at all levels. There has been a change when it comes to film, with women taking up more main/hero roles which is very welcoming, hopefully this trend will carry on and we will see more diversity in all departments. I believe there has been an improvement since when I started but there is still a long way to go.
Have you had any mentors along the way?
Had great support and advice from Escape during the course and when preparing my showreel and looking for work. Am lucky to work with great people so there are always new things to learn.
What was your breakthrough project?
Hmm... it’s hard to think of one specific project. Soon after my course at Escape Studios, I started working for Polar Media and as we are a small studio, most of us are CG generalists, tackling all aspects of a project from start to finish and pretty soon I also started project leading/managing which I really enjoy. I would say that given the responsibility to work on small projects alone alongside the bigger ones where I was part of the team, contributed to gaining more knowledge and experience and becoming a project lead.
Who inspires you?
Creative, hard working, determined people.
