L'Oréal is hiring a number of Degree Apprentices to work in their London HQ across the Marketing, HR, IT and Supply Chain departments. As part of a degree apprenticeship with Pearson College London, you will study a fully funded BA (Hons) Business Management Degree one day a week at Pearson Business School and work four days a week at L'Oréal.

An apprenticeship combines work-based and off-the-job learning. The Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship includes special modules which have been designed to allow you to achieve academic credit through work-based consultancy and research projects.
These modules are designed to be flexible and to enable you to incorporate your learning in the workplace with your academic learning in the classroom. In Introduction to Research, you will develop essential research skills which you will apply in the workplace on a project agreed with your academic mentor and your company mentor.
The Self-managed Learning modules allows even greater autonomy. In conjunction with your company mentor and academic mentor, you will design a work-based project which will give you the opportunity to demonstrate the use of your initiative and a level of autonomy by applying your skills and knowledge to a specialist area related to your work.
Throughout all your modules, you will also be collecting evidence of your knowledge, skills and behaviour in your e-portfolio. The work-based learning modules are marked below with an asterisk*.
- BM4001 Principles of Business (Spring and Summer terms)
- Our unique 60 credit module Principles of Business, consists of four interlinked parts which are designed to give you a holistic introduction to key business topics in the context of a real organisation, including finance, marketing, people, law, organisational behaviour and technology.
- Principles of Business is assessed in four parts over the course of two terms.
- Part 1 of the module focuses on the overall purpose of business, including the set-up and infancy of organisations.
- Part 2 gives a technical introduction to the pillars of business: finance, law, management, marketing and innovation.
- Part 3 consists of the experiential project which encourages students to apply their knowledge to real industries and organizations.
- Part 4 brings together each of the pillars of business in the context of strategy, governance, ethics, and leadership before concluding with the end of an organisation’s life-cycle.

You will study the following modules in order to build an understanding of the central functions within an organisation.

By your final year you will have developed a thorough understanding of the principles of business and will have had lots of exposure to real organisations, industry case studies and working practitioners. This final year is focused on bringing everything you have learned together to develop your strategic view of business.

How will your work be assessed?
Each module contains at least one piece of practice or ‘formative’ assessment for which you receive feedback. Formative assessments are developmental and do not count towards your overall module mark.
Here is the assessment breakdown for the modules:
First year (level 4)
- 80% coursework
- 10% written exams
- 10% oral assessment*
Second year (level 5)
- 73% coursework
- 15% written exams
- 12% oral assessment*
Third year (level 6)
- 75% coursework
- 25% oral assessment*
*this percentage might be higher as some modules offer alternative forms of assessment. See individual module specifications for full details.
Apart from receiving feedback for your formative assessment, you will also receive feedback for your coursework and presentations, and upon request, for your written examinations.
In order to progress to the next stage (from first to second year, and from second to third year), you will have to achieve 120 credits at the end of the academic year.

The final part of your Degree Apprenticeship is a successful completion of the End-point Assessment.
Gateway to the End Point Assessment
A gateway process is used for the College to confirm to the End Point Assessors that you have met the pre-requisite requirements of completion of the degree, portfolio and work-based project before you move to the End Point Assessment.
End Point Assessment
Following the successful completion of the Gateway, the final synoptic End Point Assessment (EPA) takes place that is made up of a number of elements and is assessed by a panel of assessors including:
- An independent assessor (Chair)
- A representative from Pearson College London
- A representative from the employer organisation.
The EPA is specifically made up of the following:
- Review of the portfolio – to confirm that there is sufficient evidence that your learning has been applied, and that you have demonstrated all the skills, knowledge and behaviours against the standard
- Review of work-based project - to confirm that there is sufficient evidence that your learning has been applied, and that you have demonstrated all the skills, knowledge and behaviours against the standard
- A 15 minute presentation on the work-based project
- A panel interview – to clarify and assess behavioural and skills competences in greater depth.
Through mentoring, portfolio development, workshops and mock assessments, you will be appropriately prepared by Pearson College London for the End Point Assessment.

Apprentices must be released by their employer from 20% of their working hours, in order to participate in off-the-job training, according to the Education and Skills Funding Agency’s requirements. This training will be divided between teaching sessions and independent learning.
You will be taught through a combination of lectures and seminars. Seminars enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller groups. You will be taught by an experienced teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the modules on the course. The team includes both academics and professional practitioners with industry experience.
As a CMDA apprentice you will attend classes at Pearson Business School on one designated day of the week during term time. However please note that you may be required to attend assessments on dates which do not fall on your teaching day.
Independent learning plays an important role in your academic and professional development. When not attending lectures or seminars you are expected to learn by self-study. Typically, this will involve reading books and journal articles, working on individual and group projects, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for examinations.
You will have access to a variety of materials to aid you in your learning. At the start of your programme, you will attend a workshop on Good Academic Practice. In addition, our OLE platform offers an online module focused on improving your study and research skills and academic writing. Finally, the Online library also offers an extensive range of literature on both study skills and academic writing.

As degree apprentices, you will be studying a self-managed learning module and a research-based module at each level of the programme i.e. in your first, second and final year of study. Each of these modules will be based on your activities taking place in your job training.
The academic year consists of three terms: Autumn, Spring and Summer. You will be on 2,25 year degree apprenticeship and attend classes during the Autumn, Spring, and Summer term, for a total of 45 weeks. During one year, you will study a total of 60 credits per each term.
Your average study workload will be approximately 37 hours per week. Typically, you will spend 6-7 hours in combination lectures, seminars, and assessment practice. All of which will fall on your one designated teaching day. In addition, you will generally spend 1 hour on pre-recorded online lecture. You will also need to spend approximately 29 hours on independent learning, half of which will be based on your work related activities, but you will need to spend some of your own time, outside work and class time, on preparation and assessment activity.
You will also have the opportunity to attend four industry workshops per term, but these are not compulsory and will not generally take place on your designated teaching day.

Stage 1 - Application

Stage 2 - Core Abilities
The Core Abilities test is 15 minutes long and contains practice questions followed by 6x Verbal, 7x Numerical and 7x Abstract Reasoning questions.
If you are eligible for the Degree Apprenticeship then we will be sending you a link to the Core Abilities test in the week we receive your application.
Stage 3 - Professional Workshop
A Professional Workshop consists of a Group Task, Written Task, Interview and Critical Thinking Test.
Workshops will take place on the 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th of November. If selected, you will be sent an email invite with a specific date and time within two weeks of completion of your Core Abilities test.
Stage 4 - Company interview
Dates are currently to be confirmed.
On an apprenticeship, your tuition fees are paid and you will therefore not be eligible to obtain a tuition fee loan.
Apprentices also receive a salary, out of which you will need to budget for your living costs and some other costs associated with your studies. Apprentices are not eligible for maintenance loans from the Student Loans Company.
An additional re-attendance fee of £750 per 15 credit module may be charged if you need to repeat a module.
Pearson Business School has a “bring your own device” policy: you will need to have your own laptop or tablet computer to access the learning materials on the Online Learning Environment, as well as the books, journals and databases available from our online library. The cost of a laptop or tablet varies according to your personal preference but we have prepared some guidance on the specification to choose.
At our Midtown campus you will have the benefit of access to free printing and photocopying facilities. However, you will have to purchase, notebooks and other ordinary stationery items. You may wish to purchase your own copies of the recommended textbooks, but please note that all textbooks are available to students in electronic editions.
If you will not be living at home, you will need to pay for accommodation. You will incur transport costs travelling to your classes and to events, such as industry workshops, which may take place elsewhere in central London. Details of public transport costs are available from the Transport for London website. There may occasionally be an optional opportunity for you to attend an event outside central London for which you would need to pay the transport costs, should you choose to attend.
