Nethmi Weerakoon, Content Executive at Dyson

How did studying at Pearson College London help you get into business?

Pearson College London is so different to traditional universities – you study within a FTSE100 company. I had the opportunity to attend industry days, undertake two internships and network with some of the best in the business world. All of these opportunities, and the support from the talent development team, really helped me to shape my skills for when I graduated.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m currently working as a Content Executive within Dyson’s Content Team. I work closely with global commercial managers, creatives and markets to create exciting social media campaigns for Dyson’s Personal Care category. It’s an awesome experience working on a variety of projects for this category as I’ve wanted to work on the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer since the moment I joined Dyson!

What lessons have you learnt during your time studying and your time working in business?

Be a go-getter and have that driving spirit to get what you want, whether it’s an internship, a networking opportunity or that dream job. Often, if you don’t ask, you don’t get, so have that determination to put yourself forward.

If you had to sum up your time at Pearson College London in one word, what would it be and why?

Opportunity. Pearson College London helps you look beyond the norm and opens the door to so many opportunities. From receiving support to develop my own business plans, to meeting CEOs of some of the biggest companies out there, it was all very inspirational and motivational. These opportunities have been so valuable in ensuring I built the skills that many employers look for today. You can’t learn that through just textbooks.

What was your favourite part of studying at Pearson College London?

I loved how Pearson College London was different. It’s smaller than traditional universities and class sizes are smaller, which means you get the chance to have one-to-one support from your tutors on projects and class work. You don’t feel like just another number in the crowd and you get a chance to shape your university experience.

I was also really proud to be part of the very first pioneering cohort. It’s great to look back and see how much Pearson College London has grown and I am so pleased I was part of that journey.

What's your favourite brand and why?

Dove – they really know how to tell a story through their marketing which gives their brand an empowering voice that resonates with women. One of my many highlights from Pearson College London is visiting Unilever HQ and learning more about their diverse marketing campaigns, one of them being Dove.
