Nicholas Smer, Interning at Emunah

What course did you study?

BSc (Hons) Business and Enterprise (Top Up)

How did studying at Pearson College London help you get into the world of business?

I know how to be a competent employee. Pearson College London made me realise what was expected from me and the responsibilities that I would have to take on in the business world. They also taught us that making mistakes is a human trait and that we should always pick ourselves up and learn from them.

What are you working on at the moment?

I'm currently interning at Emunah, which is a charity for vulnerable children. I've been helping with advertising, working with their eBay team (which raises a lot of money for the charity) and making promotional calls amongst many other things. The whole team is amazing and gives me the responsibility to make my own decisions. It's also nice to work in a team but also independently sometimes.

What lessons have you learnt during your time studying and your time working in business?

That the competencies required for studying and work are effectively intertwined. It's also great to know that a lot of what I've learnt, I can put into practice in different areas. Learning to apply myself to different scenario also helped. When working in a business environment, different scenarios do arise at different times.

What was your favourite part of studying at Pearson College London?

That the lecturers and everyone else who works there, believed in me and to facilitate this, their doors and emails of each and every lecturer was always open for all students. Any problems and they would do their utmost to help. The location was also great, it felt special when people asked "where are they based".

If you had to sum up your time at Pearson College London in one word, what would it be and why?

Friends - studying should be challenging, at the end of the day you want to continuously improve. But having your friends around you makes the work more bearable. Meeting my friends at Pearson really helped my journey at Pearson College London and we are even closer now and still encourage each other to grow to our best potential.

What's your favourite brand and why?

Vans Shoes - they keep the originality and value the heritage of their shoes. They have just the right amount of variety for customer and the shoes fit to your feet as if they were hand made. They make their shoes available in half sizes, which is great for a lot of customers. Vans genuinely value their customers and gives them collaborations (Disney, Star Wars etc) with uniquely designed shoes.
