Rachel Ruff Alumni Relations Manager, Pearson College London
How did studying at Pearson College London help you get into business?
Studying at Pearson College London gave me the opportunity to take part in a guaranteed internship, I took mine up with the marketing team within the College. The relationships I built whilst carrying out the internship and the soft skills learnt through attending industry events, networking workshops, coupled with the support from Talent Development to perfect my CV and application writing gave me the ability and confidence to secure a great role within the College where I’m now working as a graduate!
What are you working on at the moment?
My role is an Alumni Relations Manager where I work to maintain the relationships with alumni of both Pearson Business School and Escape Studios once they’ve graduated. At the moment I am working on some exciting projects such as the Escape Studios fifteen year anniversary since their founding, working to create a great event for thousands of our alumni!
What lessons have you learnt during your time studying and your time working in business?
Take every opportunity. If you think you don’t have time, try and make time because there will always be something you can gain from it that will develop you in some way. Don’t be scared to get stuck in and be involved.
What was your favourite part of studying at Pearson College London?
The best part of studying with Pearson College London was the chance to meet and be taught by a mix of tutors with different backgrounds, some had worked in large corporations like Procter and Gamble, through to those that had grown their own start-up’s into million pound businesses. You won’t find tutors like this elsewhere, their knowledge is up to date and relevant because they’ve experienced it or are experiencing it – you can’t get this from a textbook. They teach over and above the core content and give you tricks of the trade that once you’re in work genuinely put you a foot ahead.
If you had to sum up your time at Pearson College London in one word, what would it be and why?
That’s a tough one, I would say ‘distinctive’. This is because Pearson College London makes you stand out for all the right reasons, at a time when the graduate market is saturated, good grades are not enough, you need to be seen doing something different and break the mould. The opportunities that Pearson College London provides like industry events, hackathons, managing a social enterprise and travelling internationally are all things that now make me distinct. Pearson College London is my unique selling point amongst tens of thousands of graduates.
