Sarah Lee, Commercial Manager at Dyson
Sarah Lee (née Crosley) is a Pearson Business School graduate. She has recently moved to work as a Commerical Manager for Dyson. However, has told us below all about her first role working in Nestle after completing her degree that kick started her career.
She joined us at a recent event to talk about her experience to date - watch the video on the right!
How did studying at Pearson College London help you get into the world of business?
Initially – and on the surface – Pearson College London gave me the ability to apply to Graduate Schemes that I wouldn’t have dreamed of applying to before and gaining a place – out of 1,500 applicants – to one of the most prestigious Marketing Graduate schemes and now working on a very visible consumer facing brand. Aside from this, Pearson College also allowed me to gain in confidence and really build on my skills in presenting and writing so that I can now succeed in my new role.
What are you working on at the moment?
I currently work as an Assistant Brand Manager for Nestle, working on the Aero brand where I manage day to day tasks and also the launching of new products and core brand marketing.
What do you enjoy most about working at Nestle?
The people! The business is all about networking and speaking to people, which I really enjoy. I also love working on a brand as you get to really see the impact that you have on the products that are launched and how consumers react to them.
What lessons have you learnt during your time studying and your time working in business?
Always plan! Planning for deadlines is one thing but when you have five or six major projects at work, and all seem as important as the other, planning your time is the most important part of being able to be successful. I haven’t been in the business that long (3 months!) so I will let you know when I have any more lessons!!
What was your favourite part of studying at Pearson College London?
I loved being part of something new and different and being able to say that I was part of an education revolution which I really believe the sector needs.
If you had to sum up your time at Pearson College London in one word, what would it be and why?
Uplifting – sounds a bit of a funny choice but it was uplifting from a career enhancement perspective and a social one. Studying at Pearson College London has really got me to a place that I want to be and I’ve met people that will be friends for life. The experience was a really positive journey which as uplifted my expectations for myself in my long term career.
Any advice for students looking to start a career within the business industry?
Always be yourself. It’s very easy to think that employers want a particular type of person and some may do. However, it isn’t wrong to not fit that mould. Be confident about thinking about what YOU want from a career and take others advice but don’t do anything that isn’t you. My second piece of advice is to try and try and try again and don’t give up. Eventually, I got the one that fits me best. So don’t give up!
What's your favourite brand and why?
Aero, of course (that’s the brand I work on!!) Outside of any other confectionery based brands I would have to say Toms because I like the mix of great products and marketing alongside a social cause for consumers to buy into.
