Tell us a little bit about you?
My name is Christel Koney, I’m 19 years old and I’m currently in my second year of studying the BA (hons) Business Management course at Pearson.
Prior to my Degree Apprenticeship I had in my mind that I was going to university the conventional route to study straight after my A Level’s. However, after not getting a place in the universities I initially applied for, I decided to look more into degree apprenticeships and what they could offer me.
What are you studying?
BA (Hons) Business Management
Where are you working?
L’Oréal – Marketing Apprentice in the L’Oréal Paris Makeup team
Why did you choose a Degree Apprenticeship?
I chose a Degree Apprenticeship as it is the perfect combination for me.
I’m able to pursue my passion for makeup by working for one of the largest cosmetics companies in the world whilst earning a fully-funded degree in business management and earning a salary too.
In addition, after graduation, I believe I’ll be in a stronger position in the current competitive market to pursue my career as I’ll have the relevant work experience as well as the theory knowledge from my degree.
What have you enjoyed most about your course?
I have really enjoyed being able to conduct research related to my job as part of my research projects. As I have a strong interest in the cosmetics industry, I have become more engaged when completing my coursework as I have a genuine interest in the topics I choose to research.
What have you learnt so far during your work placement?
Working for a huge company such as L’Oréal comes with a vast amount of opportunities to learn new skills and expand your knowledge in the cosmetics industry. I have therefore been able to take part in workshops and courses, such as Photoshop training and the Instagram workshop at the Facebook HQ, expanding the skills and knowledge necessary for my career in marketing.
I have understood the data side of marketing through working on a data software, analyzing the data within the makeup market and how that affects the decisions made. I have also been engaged in the creative side of marketing which has involved me owning projects for retailers, designing banners for e-commerce, and understanding how marketing campaigns are created for new makeup products which are launched.
One of my favorite moments has been attending the launch events we have had with some of my favourite beauty influencers!
How has your placement helped you with your studies?
Working in the field of marketing has helped immensely with my studies as I’ve been able to understand the theory of marketing I learn at university due to being exposed to certain elements of it in the work place.
I have also learned to manage my time effectively. I have to manage my time well when working on multiple projects at work which is a skill that’s relevant to university as I have to be well-organised with my time when completing multiple assignments for the same deadline.
Do you have any advice for anyone applying for a degree apprenticeship?
If there’s a field you are interested in, there’s no better way to truly know unless you work in the field and understand the practical elements of it. In addition, you’ll be able to study the theory side and overall establish the necessary skills and knowledge of the industry, ready to thrive in your career once you graduate.
Take every opportunity given to you during your Degree Apprenticeship to learn more about your field and to network with other industry professionals. There are sacrifices that come with choosing a Degree Apprenticeship over the traditional university route such as having less holidays but the experience overall is worth it.
