Tell us a little bit about you?
Hi my name is Erica and I’m a Degree Apprentice working for The Red Carnation Hotel Collection and studying Business Management at Pearson College London.
What are you studying?
Where are you working?
I’m currently working for the Red Carnation Hotel Group.
Why did you choose a Degree Apprenticeship?
I chose a degree apprenticeship because I enjoy working and the practical side learning whereas traditional university doesn’t offer the same level of experience in industry. I also wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to study and I felt that this route would really help me decide what I want for my career, which it has, plus the working in industry already means I’m already taking steps towards my career goals.
What have you enjoyed most about your course?
What I’ve enjoyed most so far about the course is seeing the theories learnt from lectures and seminars used at work - this has also helped me with learning the content from lectures as I have seen the theory in context.
What have you learnt so far, during your work placement?
During my work placement I’ve learnt so much about hospitality, especially food and beverage. I appreciate the process of ‘from farm to fork’ so much more and the effort taken to provide five star service. Also, I didn’t know how many departments there were within the industry and the opportunities to learn are available if you’re willing to learn.
Do you have any advice for anyone applying for a degree apprenticeship?
My advice for anyone applying for a degree apprenticeship is be open and ready to learn - a lot. It’s such a unique opportunity with great long term benefits for you and your career, however it is hard work and responsibility so be prepared.
Having said that, it is definitely worth it and I am grateful for the opportunity. I’m so happy working for Red Carnation and the opportunities the company offers.
