Tell us a little bit about you?
My name is Jon Mawhood and I am 20 years old. I’m originally from a town called Yeovil in the South West.
What are you studying?
BA (Hons) Business Management
Where are you working?
I am working for L’Oréal in the professional products division. I work in the commercial department which revolves around the selling of products and supporting our field teams. My brand is L’Oréal Professionnel.
Why did you choose a Degree Apprenticeship?
Firstly, because I get multiple years of industry experience with the leading beauty firm and of course they pay for my degree! Secondly, because I
find this to be a much more engaging path and I just know if I continued down the path of traditional university, I would not have made the most of it!
What have you enjoyed most about your course?
For me I’ve always studied Business throughout school and so having the opportunity to actually see what I’ve learnt be properly applied is quite interesting.
What have you learnt so far during your work placement?
Whilst working at L’Oréal, I have learnt so much stuff. Most notably is probably that if you actually take an interest in those around you you’ll find yourself with a lot of useful contacts in different places within your workplace, now I know who to go to for cheap Urban Decay makeup!
How has your placement helped you with your studies?
Working in such a large business you get the chance to notice things that work really well and things that don’t so much. This really gives an insight that you can apply to your studies and help understand the real life applications of what you learn.
Do you have any advice for anyone applying for a degree apprenticeship?
This will probably be one of the best choices you make. If you are really serious about getting the degree apprenticeship then I’d strongly recommend preparing heavily for your interviews etc: they are not easy even if you think you’re naturally quite good at interviewing. Also, there are a lot of people also going for these incredible opportunities so if you slip up they will be in there to knock you out of the race!
