Shannon Acacia Wilson
Tell us a little bit about you?
My name is Shannon, I am originally from South Africa and spent a part of my childhood on my family’s safari camp in Mozambique. Therefore, I have a great sense of adventure and I spend a lot of my free time travelling. Outside of work, I enjoy art - my favorite medium is charcoal drawing - and I am a keen writer.
What are you studying?
Where are you working?
I work for IBM on our DWP account across Manchester and London.
Why did you choose a Degree Apprenticeship?
I originally joined IBM as an intern before university. I loved working and knew that I did not want to go down the traditional university route after working for a year. I therefore applied for the IBM Degree Apprenticeship as it allows you to combine your studies with work.
What have you enjoyed most about your course?
The course gives you every opportunity to link your day job with your studies and this opportunity has allowed me to see how theory is put into practice.
What have you learnt so far during your work placement?
I have learnt the true meaning of time management skills and what it takes to balance a degree and a job and how rewarding it is to be able to do both. I have had the opportunity be involved in new and innovative work across multiple clients and be a part of change.
How has your placement helped you with your studies?
It has allowed me to see how you implement the skills learnt at university into a practical situation which in my opinion, has made studying easier because I can remember real life situations where I have needed to use what I have learnt.
Do you have any advice for anyone applying for a degree apprenticeship?
Ensure you are passionate about your choice of degree and work. You will need to dedicate a lot of your own time to studying but it is extremely rewarding, and I am so glad I chose the Degree Apprenticeship route.
