Alphonse de Kluyver, Business School Tutor
Can you tell us about your current role at Pearson College London?
Head of Assessments, Pearson Business School
How did you get to where you are today?
Trusted my instincts and followed my nose. I didn’t always make the most obvious career choices or take the opportunities with the most immediate benefits, but rather I did what for me at the time made sense and which took me in a direction which would see I hoped long term personal and career rewards.
What makes you an enterprising academic?
My specialism is Public Law, which here in the UK has a long history but it is also always changing and developing – I try and bring the two together in how I think about the subject and for my students.
What’s the most interesting thing that has happened to you?
Moving countries and living in London. I enjoyed the life I had and work I did in Australia, but changing my career path in a new place while not really knowing anyone here was challenging and exciting. Looking back, I am very glad to have made the move.
What do you enjoy teaching the most and why?
Your students keep you on your toes and for me bring to life the subjects I teach. And when it comes together well that’s a reciprocal process between the teacher and students and very satisfying.
What's your top career tip?
Do what you’re interested in and do it well.
