John Garnett, Business School Tutor
Can you tell us about your current role at Pearson College London?
I am a tutor teaching different modules mainly in Marketing and Strategy
How did you get to where you are today?
I have worked for the past 25 years in marketing, strategy and management roles in a variety of different organisations and sectors, from FMCG to Government and Financial Services. For the last few years I have been a consultant to various businesses and started to do some teaching.
What makes you an enterprising academic?
I try to bring real experience of the business world into the classroom: not just through examples but also developing some of the key skills that are needed to succeed, like presenting and working under time pressure!
What’s the most interesting thing that has happened to you?
I hold the world record for the fastest marathon ever run*
(In the spirit of full disclosure I did it with 421 other people in 100m relay legs)
What do you enjoy teaching the most and why?
Marketing is my first love, and it's great to be able to join up people's experience of marketing as a consumer with thinking about it like a practitioner.
What's your top career tip?
Don't panic! Careers now are much more evolutionary, and you have plenty of time to find the right direction. Just try to start somewhere you will learn, and over time work out what you love (and what you don't). Then you can seek out opportunities to do more of what you love - which will also be what you are good at!
