A Night at the Hippodrome Casino

Students at the Hippodrome Casino

Simon Thomas, CEO and owner of the Hippodrome Casino, and Director of a number of companies in the entertainment and gaming industry, presented to our students and ran a Q&A session in London at the end of October 2014.

The event took place at the Hippodrome Casino, an opulent Grade 2 listed Victorian Theatre and entertainment icon in Leicester Square, in the vibrant heart of the capital, a spot that Simon describes as ‘location, location, location’, as the casino is located on the ‘busiest corner in Europe’.

Simon took time out of his busy schedule to discuss how he goes about managing time, money, people and the strategy behind London’s iconic casino. He talked about the history of the building and the fact that it used to be a circus and has welcomed the likes of stars such as Charlie Chaplin, Judy Garland and Stevie Wonder over the years; he also discussed how the staff at the Hippodrome don’t have offices, instead they prefer to be out and about, talking with their customers on the casino floor, providing our students with an interesting insight into customer relationship management and how it starts from the moment they enter the casino.

Simon opened up a Q&A session with the students to round off the day; he talked about how 7,000 customers pass through the doors on a busy day and how the casino now welcomes over 30,000 customers a week!

The event provided our students with a fascinating insight into the inner workings of a successful business and covered a number of valuable topics that help bridge the gap between industry and the information that they’ve learnt so far in the classroom.
