Induction Weekend 2013

Will Holt

Programme Leader, Will Holt, reports on all the action of the weekend

We are very proud to welcome our second cohort of students to Pearson College. The Induction Weekend on the 28th and 29th of September saw our 2013 intake of BSc (Honours) Business and Enterprise students join us for the first time.

Teamwork challenge

The weekend kicked off with the spaghetti tower challenge, testing our students’ team-working skills as they competed to build the tallest tower, strong enough to withhold the judges “hurricane test”. Later the students put their newly founded teams to the test as they took part in a branding challenge, proposing and presenting their ideas for a rebrand for Spar supermarkets.

Inspirational talks and career development

Every element of study at Pearson College resonates with the business world. Our degrees are designed by leading employers and academics, and the induction weekend set the scene perfectly.

The weekend culminated in an inspiring talk by Mohan Mohan, former Vice President and general manager of Proctor & Gamble Worldwide. Students also began thinking about their individual Personal Development Plans, planning where they hope to be on graduation and working with our Talent Coach to start developing their action plans for the term ahead.

The fun stuff

The students also got chance to find out about the extra-curricular opportunities available at Pearson College through our Students' Association. Our second year students have worked hard over the past few months to set up a number of societies at Pearson College including charities, sports, social, talks and lectures and peer support. It has been a great opportunity for our students to get involved and shape the societies that they’re excited about, for the benefit of their year group and future students. Plus of course it has given the students a fantastic highlight for their CVs, making sure they stand out from the crowd.

The societies were introduced to the students before they were given the opportunity to participate in our societies fair in the café; our sports society tested the students skills with a mini basketball hoop, whilst the peer support team set up a fun photo booth to capture photos! Businesses from the local area including Hotel Chocolat, Virgin Active Spa and the Top Secret Comedy also store joined in the fun, setting up stands and giving out vouchers and samples to the students.

I am extremely impressed by the way our new students have embraced all of the academic, industry-related, and social aspects of Pearson College life that we have thrown at them over their induction week. It's going to be a fantastic year!
