By Hayley Hewett, second year Pearson Business School student
This year we were given the exciting (yet daunting) challenge to set up our own business as part of our commercial workshop. We were given the freedom to pick the business that we wanted to start; to do this the first step was to pitch our individual ideas to the group, we then voted for the idea that we felt had the highest chance of success.
The winning idea was Reel Time Art, a business that acts as an agent bringing talented art students to weddings and other special events where they paint the key moments live. We recognised that with the growing use of social media and smartphones that anybody can take and publish professional looking photos and we wanted to make the way we capture memories special once more. Post-event the client walks away with a unique and beautiful canvas painting that can be cherished for generations. Aside from live wedding paintings we also transform photos into canvas paintings. Recently we created a canvas painted Will Holt’s wedding from a photograph.
As business students the opportunity to create a small business has been an invaluable experience. Putting our business knowledge to the test in real life has allowed us to grow as individuals. We have learnt the foundations of setting up a business - we have been through the process of incorporating the company, gained investment and gained investment.
We delegated roles that ranged from Partnership Manger (responsible for building relationships with hotels, wedding planners and interesting event spaces) to Social Media Manager (who is always on the look out for interesting content to update our social channels). Learning to take responsibility for an area of the business has helped us to gain a mature attitude towards work and become confident in our own abilities. Creativity has been the predominant skill that we have applied to Reel Time Art; by using our imagination we have been able to find solution to even the most challenging problems.
We received our first sale within two months of operation; this was a proud moment for all of us. We are excited to attend our first wedding fair next weekend where we hope to bag some more sales.
The future of the business is looking positive; we have decided to continue working on Reel Time Art even as our commercial workshops have come to an end.
