The Young Enterprise Company Programme allows students aged 15 to 19 to form their own real business before designing, marketing and selling their own product or service to the public. They can sell shares to raise capital, are provided with a business bank account by HSBC, and have sales opportunities at markets across London throughout the academic year.
In the spring they enter the Company of the Year Awards, competing for a place in the Central London Final, with the possibility of eventual European glory later in the year. They compete across three categories – Best Report, Best Trade Stand and Best Presentation – with a prize for each, and the best overall company going on to the next stage of the competition.
As well as the brilliant experience of running their own real business while still at school or college, students demonstrably develop key employability skills to equip them for success later in education and, eventually, the workplace – whatever they decide to pursue later in their lives.
"This is such an exciting part of the process – you can usually cut the tension with a knife as they meet the judges. Many of them will not have spoken publicly before, so to stand up in an auditorium of complete strangers and present their business is a massive leap and a huge part of their development."
Jessica Ganagasegaran (Greenberg Traurig LLP; Co-Chair of Central North London Local Volunteer Board)
